Topsy Stitches began in 2013; however, my love for stitching and the ideas go back to my childhood. Both my mother and grandmother were exceptionally amazing seamstresses. My grandmother created fashion that I could only dream of replicating. I watched my mother run a successful clothing and applique business, attending arts and crafts shows all over Texas and winning several awards at these shows. The skirt pictured above was her signature design - all of those parts were hand-cut and stitched manually with her Elna sewing machine!
Alas, I was sure the seamstress thing isn’t genetic because I can’t even read a pattern. I’m sure my mother and grandmother look down, laughing at my struggle to sew even a straight line, so before Topsy Stitches, I owned a cake business for several years, creating custom cakes for everything from birthdays to elaborate weddings and events. I enjoyed decorating cakes and perfecting my art, but my food allergies and the rapidly rising cost of ingredients posed several challenges, so I hung up my apron. Still needing an outlet for my creativity but being more of a techy geek with a side of perfectionism, this was when machine embroidery entered the conversation. With my husband's and three children's full support, I dove into the deep end of embroidery, buying my first (single-needle) machine, and the rest is history! I have found my calling, and it’s obvious that stitching indeed runs in my family!
I’ve met many amazing customers along the way and always look forward to the next. It’s been a blessing to bring my customers’ ideas to life with a needle and thread and watch their children grow. I remember monogramming the backpacks and lunchboxes that might now be a long-forgotten memory for some as I monogram things for kids heading off to college!
I look forward to working with you. Whether it’s embroidering your company’s logo or monogramming your baby’s first blanket, your family’s Christmas stockings, or towels for that special graduate, I’m here to help make them ALL special!
Topsy Stitches – where on earth did THAT come from?
Topsy was my mother’s name. Yes, her actual, birth-given, REAL name.
The story goes something like this – my mother's Aunt Vernadine was always falling over as a child thus she was given the nickname Topsy. Vernadine hated her name, so as an adult, she changed it to Topsy. Since Aunt Topsy was my grandmother’s favorite sister, my grandmother wanted to name her daughter Topsy, but my grandfather said absolutely not! Naturally, when the next baby was a girl, my grandmother finally got her wish. We still “reuse” family names a lot. My middle name came from my Aunt Nan, and her second daughter (my cousin), is named Topsy!
I lost my mother unexpectedly in 2013, but everything she taught me and her memory live on through Topsy Stitches!
I have commercial, multi-needle and flatbed, single-needle machines, along with hoops and frames in various types and sizes, which allow me to stitch almost anything! Fun fact - the machines have names!
With over ten years of experience and an eye for the small things like product and fabric patterns, my process results in high quality and includes YOU in every step along the way!
